Position: PhD student

After post-doc at NTU, he works in private chemical company in Singapore. CK published over 50 papers with us, mostly on graphene chemistry. He was key chemist in the group in our golden graphene era. First student who graduated in Martin’s group. Married to Adeline (see line bellow).

Zafir joined us after FYP in spectroscopy group. He did a great job in the field of nanomotors and sensing. He could take anything life threw on him and overcome it. Way to go (and apology for calling you “Nasir” after my old Egyptian friend first 3 years 🙂

Hong worked on micro and nanomachines. She recieved award from Chinese ministry for the best overseas PhD; straight after PhD she received full professorship in China.

Lei was with us half of his PhD on CSC fellowship. He made big advances in light powered motors. He returned back to China to his wife and baby.

Yi Heng was with us only short time before Martin moved to Prague. Nevertheless, he made significant contribution to sensing with modified graphenes – topic co-developed at Bosch research labs Singapore.

Yong went long way from applied to the basic research, working on 2D materials as well on nanomachines.

Tiana works on micromachines development. Tiana does not give up easily. Perhaps because she holds the same surname as Mileva Maric, the first wife of Albert Einstein (who likely co-developed everything  Einstein claimed during his year mirabilis 1905). Both from Serbia, Tiana has the advantage of military training 🙂 

Nur develops her Ph.D. project under join NTU-University of Cambridge degree (supervised by Martin and Prof. Adrian Fisher, Cambridge). He interests are cells and nanomaterials interactions.

Hui Ling is very quiet but very focused and hard working. Great asset to the group, works on biosensors.

Nasuha has been working on biosensing. Smiling and energetic, she always brought a smile and good mood to the group.

Naziah joined us under join NTU-University of Cambridge PhD fellowship. Naziah was instrumental to our nanotoxicity work. Always smiling, easy to be found in the group (before Nur and Nasuha joined) because of hidjab.

Xinyi, always smiling, focused, very hard working, replying to emails at 2 AM have more papers than many senior post-docs (and she is much better than most of them) did tremendous work.

Lu worked on graphene and he published 2 Angew. Chem. papers as first author (among many other papers). Imagine that he was dismissed by previous group as “unusable”. As Martin’s moto says “. It’s about … how you’re led, and how much you get it.” He does post-doc at Geoffrey A. Ozin’s lab in Canada.

James did BSc with us in 2011, moved to Tokyo Tech for masters and after he had enough he moved back to do PhD finished. James was incredible not only in research but in ability to attract his own travel funding. He will not get lost in the World.

Rou Jun did combined PhD with MIT (under Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology, SMART) and NTU with Martin as main supervisor and Prof. Jongyoon Han (MIT) as co-supervisor. She did an excellent job and she embarked at post-doc in Australia.

Shu Min is very talented young scientist. She worked on 2D materials and after short post-doc at NTU she joins Singapore Ministry of Interior on the important (and secret) mission.

Colin worked on graphene during his PhD. He is now in education, going to start his own school. Married to our FYP student (Martin group produces papers but also happy marriages in large numbers :-). 

Adeline worked very hard, focused on biosensing. After working in research department of Taiwanese company, she turned back to academia and she does post-doc in Nam-joon’s group at NTU. Married to CK (see line above, left 🙂

Wei Zhe was very versatile student, worked on anything from CNTs, graphene to microrobots.

Alex was very focused, hard working excellent young scientist. After receiveing PhD he continues his research in A*Star, Singapore.

Hwee Ling worked at graphene. She was able to work on anything the graphene chemistry brough to her and she is one of our most cited group members!

She started nanotoxicity work with us. Persistent, smiling, she was a great asset. Elaine workes for pharmaceutical company.

Guanjia got a job as a lead scientist at P&G research facility, Singapore. Now working for an Australian company, he spends more time in the air than on the ground. He is grandfather of microrobots in our group, he started this whole topic with us.
